Grade Three Lessons Animal Inquiry Unit:

First Stage: Connect and Wonder

General Background Information:

We introduced our first inquiry project by showing our grade 3 students some Salmon videos that are listed on the salmon websites page. The videos show the life cycle of the salmon and salmon spawning streams. These videos were shown on our LCD projectors in our classrooms. We also visited Goldstream Nature Park for a field trip on Chum salmon. Students viewed the salmon spawning stream and our naturalist showed us videos about the salmon life cycle and dissected a dead female salmon. Students followed up our group discussions with some activities in class. One exciting activity was a visit from Scott Mair, who shared his program on Owls. Students had an opportunity to dissect owl pellets and label the small rodent bones.

Please see separate pages of Salmon and Owl Websites to explore with students.

Second Stage: Investigate

Group Inquiry project:

After background information was provided, students completed a KWL chart for salmon.  They generated a list of possible questions about salmon.  Example questions:

What do salmon need to survive?

What do salmon do to survive?

How do humans impact their survival?

Students processed at least 3 facts about salmon and created a pamphlet. Students shared the pamphlets with other grade 3 class.

Third Stage:  Express:

Students chose their own animal and conducted an independent inquiry on this animal.Students used various websites bookmarked on the lab computers. These sites (World Book on-line, Enchanted Learning and National Geographic) can be accessed through the Cordova Bay Library page.http://cordovabay.sd63.bc.ca/file.php/1/Library_Site/Cordova_Bay_Library%202/Welcome.html  Students also looked for books in the library for their animal topic.  Please refer to the Inquiry Model page to understand the process we followed.  After the students had explored their animal we posed the questions:

What does your animal need to survive?

What does your animal do to survive?

How do humans impact your animal's survival?

Students choose facts from their information to create a brochure that presents and answers some or all of  these questions.  The final brochure project represents a snapshot of what they have learned about their animal. The final step was sharing the brochure with students from the other grade three class and getting feedback from their peers.  Each students was also responsible for completing a self-evaluation of their final product.
